Project Moon Bear
Meet Project Moon Bear
Founded in 2018, Project Moon Bear is a South Korean nonprofit dedicated to rescuing bears from captivity and giving them better lives. Its team provides daily care, veterinary support, and enrichment at its sanctuary in Hwacheon.
Beyond rescue, the organization works to improve conditions for captive bears through research, education, and advocacy.
THE NEED
The ban is in place. The work isn't over.
South Korea’s ban on bear farming took effect in 2026, but many bears still need safe places to live. Bears who cannot return to the wild depend on sanctuaries for lifelong care.
Project Moon Bear’s current sanctuary is full. To help more bears, the organization needs additional space, along with the resources to provide food, veterinary care, and daily support for the rest of the bears' lives.
WHAT THE BEAR'S NEED NOW
A home for life.
Project Moon Bear estimates that building facilities to house 100 bears will cost approximately $4.5 million. Government funding and the organization’s own resources will contribute, but more support is needed.
And a sanctuary is only the beginning. Each bear needs ongoing care, experienced caregivers, veterinary attention, and opportunities to explore and engage with its surroundings.
WHY ASIA WILD?
Local experience. Lasting commitment.
Asia Wild supports locally led organizations providing hands-on care and protection for animals. Project Moon Bear shares that commitment, working to give rescued bears safer lives and a future beyond captivity.
Together, we can help turn the end of bear farming into the beginning of a better life.
